Walking keeps your brain young
We all know that walking is good for us. Getting our steps in is an important part of physical health, walking outside has even more benefits, and walking with others has even further benefit for mind, body, and spirit. At Wise Womxn Walking Club Stillwater, we combine all three!
Today I wanted to take a minute to share about a recent study I came across that talks specifically about one of the cognitive benefits of aerobic exercise (walking is an excellent example). Mark Hyman, MD reports "a random clinical trial in the Journal of Sport and Health Science assigned adults ages 26 to 58 to follow an aerobic exercise program targeting 150 minutes per week for 12 months. On MRI, their brains shifted to look about 0.95 years "younger" than the control group on a brain-age algorithm. That might not sound dramatic, but brain aging is cumulative, and small shifts add up." He goes on to surmise that aerobic exercise impacts brain health likely due to improved cerebral blood flow and neuroplasticity, though the exact mechanisms behind the brain age improvements are still being studied.
At Walking Club we help you knock out 12o of those 150 minutes twice a month! All while getting to know some of the incredible women in our community. Who doesn't love a good multi-task?!
