It’s officially spooky season! The sun has moved into the mysterious, murky waters of Scorpio and folks are preparing for Halloween, Samhain, and Día de los Muertos. It’s the time of year you’ll hear witchy woo-woo folks like myself talk about the “thinning of the veil,” when the otherworldly realm becomes a little more accessible and we may find ourselves better able to connect and communicate with our guides, ancestors, and loved ones who have passed.
For me (and for many), this time of year is filled with a complicated mixture of grief and celebration. On Halloween Day eight years ago, I heard my firstborn son’s heartbeat for the very first time and just hours later, my sister Angela took her last breath and passed away after a battle with breast cancer.
Celebration and grief. The dark with the light. The brutal and the beautiful: the “brutiful” (a term coined by Glennon Doyle that I am reminded of often).
So in the spirit of holding both, today’s reading riffs off of the theme of Tricks and Treats.
First up? The Seven of Cups. I don’t think I could have chosen a more fitting card to represent both Tricks and Treats. You know that feeling where you know you have to make a move, but you’re paralyzed by the choices before you? And you know that whatever path you choose will likely change your life in some way, but fear of the unknown outcome is what’s holding you back? Around here we call that Analysis Paralysis. And that’s exactly what this card brings to mind. So many options, so many potential outcomes. Will it be a trick or a treat? Or a trick dressed up as a treat? Here’s the thing: there’s no knowing until you commit to it. And so we oftentimes stay stuck rather than risk making the wrong decision.
Sometimes the message coming from this card is “don’t chase every shiny object.” But today the message is kind of the opposite: Go with your gut. Take a chance. Move forward with something. Anything. Just move FORWARD.
Because you know what? Our other other card this week is the Page of Pentacles (depicted here as Diamonds). And the Page of Pentacles wants you to know that a gift awaits, no matter the path you choose. The Page of Pentacles encourages you to get curious about the outcome and consider the possibility that even our mistakes hold glimmers of goodness. The Page of Pentacles wants you to channel your inner Bob Ross and reframe mistakes as "happy accidents." To make lemonade out of lemons. To look for the merriment in the misstep, the lesson in the loss, the wisdom in the whoopsie, the freedom in the failure, the blessing in the block.
The beautiful in the brutal.
So as we move into liminal territory this week, my hope for you is that you’ll receive more Treats than Tricks—and that you won’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from ringing some doorbells.
