In case you aren’t living in an area that adheres to Daylight Savings Time, a little refresher: Where I live, we turn our clocks forward one hour to “leap ahead” in the Spring and in the Fall we “fall back” once again, leaving us in the dark one hour earlier than usual.

I usually try to keep things pretty positive on this page, but I’m not gonna lie, y’all… I friggin’ hate the fall-back.

It’s just so depressing to leave work at the end of the day and have it already be dark out. By the time I get home, all I want to do is curl up under a blanket and watch TV. If only we could mirror nature and go into a state of hibernation all winter long. But for us humans living in a Capitalist society, life goes on—even in the darkest of days.

And so I ask myself, what would my fellow Wise Womxn do? Kari would remind us to bust out those happy lamps (and go for a walk, of course!), Nicole would encourage us to move our bodies first thing in the morning, and as for me? I would like to invite us all to embrace the cozy—in my house that means Comfrt blankets and battery-operated candles in just about every room.

With the woes of the dreaded fall-back on my mind this week, I posed this question to the Tarot:

As we head into the darker months, what will help us to maintain the light?

And we received… The Wheel of Fortune (X).

To be perfectly honest, the Universe threw me a softball with this card—Not much interpretation to do here! My deck even depicts the image of a clock face… Can it get more literal than that?! The Wheel of Fortune quite literally tells us to “live in the season.” To quote from the Playdate With The Universe guidebook, “The wheel turns—seasons shift, cycles repeat, and you are a part of something larger. Change is neither good nor bad, it’s motion. Flow with what’s turning rather than fighting it.”

As I pondered the meaning of the Wheel of Fortune for today’s reading, I was reminded of this passage from Ecclesiastes 3:1: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” (If you’re new around here, this is a spiritual space—not a religious one. I just quoted Scripture, but trust me: this is a rare occurrence).

Some of you may associate this passage with the Bible, but I’m willing to bet a lot of you first heard it in the song “Turn! Turn! Turn!” by Pete Seeger, made famous in 1965 by The Byrds. I personally prefer the version by Dan Zanes and Elizabeth Mitchell from their children’s music album by the same name. In fact I like it so much that I play it every week during playtime at the Baby Storytime program I lead as part of my day job at the library. “Turn! Turn! Turn!” is the fifth song on the CD and just happens to land perfectly for me to announce “It’s clean-up time!” The altered lyrics are as follows:

(sing)

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to work, a time for play
A time for night, a time for day
A time for sleep, a time to wake
A time for candles on the cake

I linked to the song in this post in case you want to listen to the actual musicians perform it, but future verses go like this:

A time to dress, a time to eat
A time to sit, and rest your feet
A time to teach, a time to learn
A time for all to take their turn

A time to cry, and make a fuss
A time to leave, and catch the bus
A time for quiet, a time for talk
A time to run, a time to walk

A time to get, a time to give
A time to remember, a time to forgive
A time to hug, a time to kiss
A time to close your eyes and wish!!

A time for dirt, a time for soap
A time for tears, a time for hope
A time for fall, a time for spring
A time to hear the Robin sing!

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

As you’ve hopefully picked up on by now, we’re all about “living in the season” around here. In addition to leaning into the Astronomical seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, you know I’m also all about the Astrological seasons as well. And you may have heard Kari share about how she is learning to live in more alignment with the cyclical nature of her hormones—and encouraging clients to do the same.

This is your reminder (and mine, too) to embrace the darker season upon us. Don’t fight it or try to change it. Work with it. Let yourself turn inward a bit more, become a bit more reflective. Allow yourself to rest. To consume a bit more than you produce. To set healthy boundaries. To say “no” from time to time. And to remember that it is just a season, and that lighter days will return and those opportunities that maybe didn’t feel quite right for this season are bound to return when the wheel turns once again. It’s a good reminder, for sure—and it’s easier said than done.

Because even as strive to honor the seasons we are in, we also acknowledge the reality that for many of us there are still children to feed, baths to give, bills to pay, pets to care for, laundry to fold, meals to plan, groceries to purchase, events to prepare for, work responsibilities to tend to, and any other number of responsibilities to carry. And so we push through, even when we want nothing more than to take a nap.

And so this week, I want you to ponder what “living in the season” might look like for you. What are one or two REALISTIC things you can do—or stop doing—in order to embrace the darker, colder season that’s upon us?

If you are in need of some inspiration, I have some optional homework for you that might help jumpstart some ideas:
