9.23-9.29.2025: Wisdom & Escape

There are some cards that just won’t leave you alone, and “Wisdom” from the Poesis Oracle deck is one of those for me! I pull it—no joke—probably 2/3rds of the time. Sometimes it gets to the point where it’s almost annoying, like—STOP TROLLING ME, Wisdom! When I pulled it for the collective reading this morning, I actually rolled my eyes and said aloud “Okay! What else though?” And then I received “Escape.”

Let’s be honest—sometimes we can all use a healthy distraction from the weight of the world. The combination of inconceivably horrific current events on top of personal traumas on top of the minutiae of life and its everyday stressors can be enough to run a person ragged.

These two cards together—Wisdom + Escape—reminded me of a recent Wise Womxn Walk segment from our very own Kari Goeden, in which she makes an important distinction between DISTRACTION and AVOIDANCE.

If you feel like burying your head in the sand or running away to some exotic locale, you are not alone. But avoiding your problems or ignoring important issues is not a sustainable long-term solution. After all, these things tend to have a way of creeping up on us and forcing us to face them whether we like it or not. And usually the longer you’ve avoided them, the more intimidating they appear when they rear their ugly heads. So while I’m not suggesting you jump in a boat and paddle your way to some deserted island to live out the rest of your days in isolation, I am suggesting that perhaps a temporary escape is in order… “Temporary” being the key word here.

If you can swing it (lucky you!)—schedule yourself a weekend off. Go do something completely new. Something that doesn’t remind you of anything in the “real world.” If you—like me—can’t swing an entire weekend away (or even a night, or even a few hours), start with ten minutes. Go for a walk somewhere new. Sit on a balcony in the early-autumn sunshine and read a book. Take yourself to lunch at that restaurant you’ve been meaning to try. Throw on some noise-canceling headphones and listen to music. Watch a movie. Take a bath. Big or small, find some way to disconnect from the drama for a hot minute.

When the timer goes off, or the song ends, or you reach the end of the chapter, you can return to the real world knowing that this is a place you can access again in the future. And chances are, you’ll be returning to the real world with a bit more peace and possibly even a bit more WISDOM (I see you, Wisdom…🙄).
