The Power of Parallel
Have you ever noticed that some of the best conversations you have happen in the car? I hear this from people all of the time and have definitely experience it for myself. I think so many factors are at play here—a good play-list, getting out of the house, a change of scenery, fewer distractions, maybe some good car snacks… I could go on and on. The biggest contributor in my mind to why conversation can flow so naturally in the car is the fact that we’re typically sitting parallel to our conversation partners (though I’ve also experienced some pretty sweet convos with kiddos from the boosters in back). But back to the parallel set-up… there is just something about sitting next to rather than in front of someone, that makes conversation just hit different.
Opening up and sharing vulnerability just feels safer and more natural. There are so many indigenous cultures around the world that strategically avoid intense eye-contact for this very reason. The next time you are wanting/needing to have a heart-centered conversation with a partner, friend, family-member, co-worker, whomever- try having that talk on a walk.
