Finding a rhythm
When we walk, our bodies eventually find a rhythm. Our steps become more rhythmic, our arms begin to sway rhythmically, and eventually our breath finds its rhythm, too. You might be wondering what all of this has to do with mental wellness… No need to worry, you know I’ve gotchu.
Regulating your breathing by finding a rhythm—preferably deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth, helps to tell your brain that it is safe. When we breathe more quickly and our breath is shallow, the message we send to our brains is that we are in danger.
The next time you’re feeling like you need a reset and decide to take your stress for a walk, tune in to your breathing. Have you found your rhythm yet? If not, try intentionally breathing in through your nose for 4 and out through your mouth for 6. Eventually your body will naturally take over and get to work, calming your nervous system while you enjoy your walk. More on the particulars of how this all works next week!
