Today we’re kicking things off with a little gem from the Cosmic Rx Weekly Energy Report:
“The Libra New Moon lands Saturday, and it’s the best partnership lunation of the year. This usually gets flattened into ‘manifesting your soulmate,’ but that’s the shallow version. The better questions are who belongs in your next chapter, what you want your closest relationships to actually feel like, and what kind of friend or partner you’re in the middle of becoming.”
At 17° Libra, Saturday’s New Moon just so happens to align with the Three of Swords. As you’ve probably heard me say before, no card in the Tarot is "all good" or "all bad." But I'm not gonna lie, the Three of Swords is a challenging one. Associated with themes of heartache, regret, grief, loss, and trauma, it is often regarded as one of the most difficult cards in the entire Tarot. But here's the thing about this particular brand of heartbreak: sometimes our thoughts about the situation hurt more than the thing itself. The schoolyard phrase "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me" simply doesn't hold up. Words do hurt—especially the ones you fling carelessly at yourself.
Oftentimes when I encounter the Three of Swords with clients, I like to share an anecdote from Brené Brown: “The story I’m telling myself.” When she’s in conflict with her husband, she uses this phrase to clear the air and get to the bottom of what’s really happening. For example, she shared about a time she arranged for the two of them to go on a romantic swim while on vacation. The kids were still asleep inside the cabin, and she thought an early morning swim would be a nice way for the two of them to connect before the day began. But during the swim, her husband kept blowing her off whenever she tried to engage him in conversation. She began to feel rejected by him and started assuming his distant response was about her. She had recently gained a few pounds… Maybe she wasn't looking as sexy in her swimsuit anymore? So instead of letting her anxiety and resentment build to a boiling point, she did something vulnerable. She shared what was going on in her brain. She said "I’ve been trying to connect with you all morning and I feel like you’re blowing me off. The story I'm telling myself is that you aren't attracted to me anymore." As it turns out, her husband’s cold behavior wasn’t about her at all. The night before, he had had a very vivid dream in which one of their children was drowning and being in the water had triggered the same panicky feeling from the dream. He had been fighting off a panic attack the entire swim. He hadn’t been distant because of anything to do with her. He was just trying to concentrate on his swimming and make it safely back to the dock.
Sometimes the stories we tell ourselves are just that: fiction based on our own misconception of the situation—or maybe not complete fiction, but we're blowing it up in our minds and hearts more by ruminating and piling on. Identifying and stating the story you're telling yourself aloud—to yourself or, ideally, to another person—can either confirm what you’ve been worrying about or show you what’s REALLY happening. Either way, putting words to what’s going on in your brain can move you towards healing and coming to peace with the person or situation.
The New Moon presents an opportunity for you to examine the way you think and talk about your relationships—past, present, and future. Whether you are partnered or not, now is a great time to notice if you are hanging on to old wounds or stories regarding your most intimate relationships—romantic and platonic alike.
“There’s a catch built into this New Moon, and it’s the part that makes it work. After you name what you want, you check whether you’re offering it. Venus is still retrograde underneath all of this, so nothing this week is about launching something new. It’s about getting clear enough that you’d recognize the right thing if it turned up on a random Tuesday.” (Cosmic Rx Weekly Energy Report)
So speak aloud not only “the stories you’re telling yourself,” but also the hopes, dreams, goals, and expectations you have for yourself and your loved ones. Words are powerful spells. Let’s cast them with care!
With these themes in mind, I asked the Tarot cards to share a word of wisdom regarding our most intimate relationships. And we received… The Tower (XVI).
I know what you’re thinking—another challenging card! And you’re not wrong. But you know what? The Tower doesn't have to be scary. Yes, it can represent the crumbling of an institution and subsequently the need for a complete overhaul. But it can also serve as a reminder that revamping the whole thing is good and necessary sometimes.
Have you ever felt worried that if you speak the ugly truth about something in a relationship, the whole thing will come crashing down? If that’s you right now, be honest with yourself: do you really want to be in a relationship that is that fragile anyway? If you can’t tell the truth without the foundation falling out from under you, maybe it’s a sign that it’s time to start fresh. Say the thing. Ask for what you need. Put words to the story that’s been playing on repeat in your mind. Rewrite the relationship contract. Let the old way of being fall away. Sometimes a shake-up is exactly what's needed. Whatever ends up crumbling can be rebuilt—even stronger this time.
