2026 should have come with a Content Warning.
I mean, really. Just horrific news cycle after horrific news cycle. Maybe that’s the way it has always been? But it really feels like it’s been a particularly gruesome year. This week, my newsfeed (and likely yours, too) has been overrun by the atrocity coming out of Cornell University. Last week, we watched as the system once again failed to deliver justice for a black boy and his family—Nolan Wells. Keep saying his name—and an unnamed red-headed musician tried to salvage his tour while remaining neutral on the topic of genocide. We’ve witnessed an upsurge in hate crimes in this country, including lynchings targeting black people in the South. The pathologically slow and painful release of the Epstein Files. ICE raids, unlawful deportations, and the imprisonment of children and their families. And the list goes on.
Coming off of a conversation with a coworker who was feeling triggered by the Cornell story, I walked to my car to pull cards on my dinner break. As I listened to the rain pummel my roof and watched the droplets race each other down my windshield, I had zero idea what to even ask. But as I shuffled, as often happens, a question popped into my mind:
What can we prioritize in order to take care of ourselves and our loved ones this week?
It felt like a fitting question, considering we are in Libra season—the sign of balance, harmony, and relationships. So I went with it. And do you know which card came to me?
The Star (XVII)
The message this week is simple: We must prioritize HOPE.
(I said “simple,” not “easy.” 😏)
Now don’t get me wrong. This isn’t some spiritual bypassing, "love and light” bullshit. We don’t get to just sit back and wish our way to a better future. Use your voice, yes. Get out and vote, yes. Stand up for what’s right, yes. RUIN THE FUCKING GROUP CHAT, YES. Raise empathetic boys with a conscience who understand that the absence of no does not mean yes, yes. But we can’t do any of these things if we don’t have hope. The absence of hope is despair. And when we experience despair, we fall into apathy. And when we fall into apathy, we tell ourselves “nothing I say or do will make a difference anyway, so why even try?” And so we mustn’t allow ourselves to fall into despair—or to be dragged down into it. Because without hope, we don’t stand a chance.
This description from the Playdate With the Universe guidebook really says it all: The Star represents “A breath after the storm. The breakthrough after a breakdown. The Star offers healing, faith, and renewed hope. It reminds you that light is always there—you just have to look up.”
And so this week, I invite you to catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Save it for a rainy day.
