1.13-1.19.2026: A Message for this Moment
At the time of this writing, ICE is terrorizing the city of Minneapolis—kidnapping, injuring, and killing our neighbors. Word on the street is that hundreds more agents are being deployed as we speak. Everyone I talk to seems to be wavering between shock, rage, disbelief, fear, and despair. I know that I have personally experienced a similar range of emotions over the past week as well. When I sat down with my Tarot cards to pull the collective reading, I felt numb. I didn’t know what to even ask. So I didn’t ask anything. I just shuffled the cards and trusted that what I pulled was what we needed to hear.
The Tower. Because, of course The Tower. Even if you’re not well-versed in Tarot, you can pick up on the meaning of this card just by looking at the imagery. A tall building burns and crumbles, as people leap from its windows. Lightning illuminates the blackened sky. Doom and gloom and fear and chaos reign. For me, The Tower will forever remain a symbol of the pandemic. In early 2020 when I was just a baby Tarot reader learning the cards for the first time, I asked the Tarot to tell me more about this “COVID-19” thing. Was it really going to be as big a deal as the news is making it out to be? And I received (you guessed it) The Tower. Doom and gloom and fear and chaos did, indeed, reign. But what you might not know by just looking at the imagery is that The Tower also represents a time of change. Structural, societal change—something we experienced during the pandemic (for better or for worse) and something we desperately need in this moment. When the smoke clears and the thunder subsides and the echoes of shrieks can no longer be heard, may we find the tiniest glimmer of possibility amidst the rubble of what’s left.
Your rage is sacred. Your grief is valid. And at the same time, the Page of Cups whispers “Don’t let this moment harden you.” Stay soft, stay gentle, stay kind-hearted. Protest, yes. Resist, yes. Help one another, absolutely. AND: continue finding creative outlets for your emotions to flow through. Read and write poetry. Sing and listen to music. Make and consume art. When so much feels so ugly, don’t underestimate the power and importance of seeking out beauty (and creating it).
The Moon shines its silvery light down on this dark time, casting strange shadows and illuminating things that go bump in the night. These are fearful times—suspicious, deceptive, confusing times. Confusion and deception are, after all, some of the most insidious tools in the arsenal of the powers-that-be.
“The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”
I’ve been seeing this quote from George Orwell’s 1984 floating around on social media. How utterly true to this moment, as we all saw the same video footage of Renee Nicole Good’s final moments, but are somehow meant to believe her murder was an act of self-defense. And let’s not forget the countless black and brown men, women, and children in this country who have been wrongfully criminalized and killed at the hands of the people meant to keep them safe. People of Color know all too well what it’s like to have the wrongful deaths of their loved ones smeared all over the news and justified by leaders.
The Moon speaks to this deception and reminds us to be wary and to remain vigilant, but at the same time to avoid turning our suspicion upon one another. Don’t let the confounding distraction tactics coming from the top turn you against your neighbor. We must band together in this moment if we’re going to make it through this long night together. Things will look different by the light of day. In the meantime, keep on howling at the Moon.
And speaking of the Moon, this week’s New Moon in Capricorn ushers in the start of Aquarius Season. Progress. Persistence. Community. Humanitarianism. The seeds of intention you plant this week have the potential to make a lasting difference—for you and for your community. So take action—no matter how small. Those tender little shoots may look frail as they break the surface of the soil and reach tentatively towards the sun, but don’t be fooled. Below the surface, roots are taking hold.
