1.20-1.26.2026: Resist
The ICE presence in Minnesota has not wavered since last week’s collective reading, but neither have the hearty Minnesotans resisting and protesting. As a reminder, these readings are (and always have been) focused on self-reflection, which is just one piece of the complicated puzzle of the human experience.
Last week, I felt too numb to ask a specific question for the collective reading, but I let the cards and their messages come to me organically. This week, I’m trying something different. I pulled four cards for four different experiences: one for those feeling hopeless (Three of Wands); one for those unsure where to begin (The World); one for those already out there in their communities doing the work (The Tower); and one for those who want to get involved, but feel thwarted by obstacles (Two of Cups). You might identify with one or more of these (or none of them, and that’s okay too!). As always, I welcome you to take what resonates and leave the rest behind. Feel free to read all of them, or just the description that fits you most closely at the moment. This is a collective reading, so it won’t resonate for everyone, but my hope is that most of you reading this will be able to find a glimmer of wisdom, validation, comfort, or empowerment in these words.
For those feeling hopeless: Three of Wands
The Three of Wands represents that feeling of overwhelm when you look up from where you’ve been walking and see you still have SO MUCH FURTHER to go. This is kind of a reverse “not being able to see the forest for the trees” situation—Rather than being overwhelmed by details (the trees) and unable to see the big picture (the forest), the big picture is the ONLY thing you can see, so it’s hard to see the smaller steps you might take to get where you want to go. The message for you is to not let that bigger picture put you into a state of freeze. Right now you are zoomed waaaaaay out. Take a cleansing breath and zoom it back in. What’s in your immediate control? What is one step you can take right now? Make it as small and simple as possible. Make it manageable. Make it sustainable. Zoom out from time to time to reorient yourself, but don’t let that wide lens view distort and minimize the good progress you’re making right here, right now.
For those unsure where to begin: The World
Similar to the message I just shared with the Three of Wands, The World represents the BIG PICTURE. As the final card in the Tarot, it represents a culmination. A closing of one cycle and beginning of another. There are so many interconnected, interwoven, nuanced issues at play in this troubled, troubled world. But we can’t solve the entire world. Focus on what you can control. Start with integration, with INTEGRITY. A simple definition of integrity is that “your outsides match your insides.” Determine what your values are and make sure your actions align with those values. This is about breaking cycles in your own life, in your own family, in your own inner circle. Not sure where to begin? Let’s turn to the astrology of this moment. One of my favorite astrologers, Chani Nicholas, says now is the time “to do some internal composting. Anything that gets in the way of us connecting to our personal and collective power must be broken down, repurposed, and reworked. It’s time to dig deep and remember who the eff we are.” Now take the next step accordingly.
For those already out there in their communities doing the work: The Tower
If you’re experiencing Déjà vu, yes this is the second week in a row I pulled The Tower. Makes sense, considering we are very much in a Tower Moment. Structures are teetering. Empires must fall. See that crown toppling to the ground? No Kings welcome here. We can’t go on like this any longer. We’ve reached a boiling point and something has got to give. It’s time to metaphorically burn it all down and start fresh. In their New Moon in Capricorn newsletter this week, Chelb of Phasecraft Magic says that the Tower shows us “that the decision to take power into our own hands is what makes the toppling of what was possible, so that we can create the world that will come.” Stay in your own power. Don’t get swept up in the chaos and destruction. Know that your efforts are ushering in a new way of being that we so desperately need.
For those who want to get involved, but feel thwarted by obstacles: Two of Cups
This one's for the folks who are yearning to join the resistance movement despite the very real limitations that make it difficult. The folks carrying the weight of physical and/or mental illness, the folks caregiving for young children or elders (or both), the folks who fear for their safety, or anyone else experiencing real barriers to active participation. The Two of Cups suggests that an entry point for you might involve relationships with others. Raising good, kind, antiracist kids is one way to do your part. Showing kindness to strangers whose stories we can’t possibly begin to understand is another. This card is also about balance. Perhaps you aren’t able to volunteer, but you could donate to the food drive being arranged by your child’s school. Maybe you can’t show up to that protest, but you can choose to support local businesses instead of feeding the corporations who support ICE. If you’re already cooking dinner for yourself or your family, maybe you can double the recipe and offer the leftovers to a neighbor who has been sheltering in place. If you’re already driving your kids to school, maybe you can offer to pick up someone else’s child so they don’t have to risk their lives at the bus stop. The Two of Cups also has me thinking about reciprocity. Is there a friend or family you could pair up with to swap or share labor/care tasks in order to free each other up to get involved? Don’t reinvent the wheel. Connect with the networks already doing the work and see where your money, time, or talents might fit in. Commit to one small, consistent act. Everything makes a difference.
There are so many actionable, tangible ways to care for your community during this troubling time—and no way is too small. If you are looking for resources or more ways to get involved, start here:
