Walking and Self-efficacy
Walking reduces anxiety. There are numerous reasons why, but one tid-bit that I think can get overlooked is the impact walking has on our self-efficacy (aka your belief in yourself). You set out with a plan, and you do what you say you’re going to do.
Making little promises to ourselves and following through on said promises makes our brains feel really good. For best results, make your goals super-achievable. I’m talking so easy, that you almost can’t not do it.
Let’s say your goal is to walk after lunch. Start with 5 minutes. I know that sounds like nothing, and might even sound pointless and kind of annoying, but I promise… starting little is key. It’s all about building the habit and strengthening that self-efficacy. Once you’ve stuck with the habit for a week or two, consider up-leveling it to 10 minutes. Pretty soon you’ve developed a habit that’s not only good for your physical health, but has also done a lot for your mental wellness.
